Building Automation Case Studies

By network-enabling electronic devices quickly and cost-effectively, "Wireless Device Solutions" products make it possible to integrate building sub-systems (including security, HVAC, lighting, elevators and safety systems) into a single, efficient building management network.

For example, the facilities manager at a large corporate campus can control everything from electrical and water metering to building access from a single terminal, and can even diagnose system problems remotely.

1. Bluetooth-enabled Mobile Terminal for Access Control

Customer has created a Mobile access control system that allows access allows for Employees or visitors to be identified with a fingerprint scanner. This system allows for a more convenient access control for companies to better secure their infrastructures.

Wireless Device Solutions - Bluetooth-enabled Mobile Terminal for Access Control

By making use of any one of Sena Technologies Parani-SD, Customer was able to build a Mobile Access Control unit that provides seamless security control with ease of implementation, while providing maximum security.

Solutions:  Parani-SD100 and Parani-SD200

Benefits:

  • Low-Cost solutions allowing you develop mobile security devices, while providing wireless communication and ease of implementation with today's high tech Security Systems.
  • Allows for easy setup and maintenance to minimize potential downtime.
  • Optional antennas allow for wireless data transfer of distances up to 1 km.

2. Remote Management of Elevator Control Systems

An Elevator's control unit manages the day to day operations inside an elevator. With the need to be up to date with today's smart building control systems, Elevator manufacturers need to provide a system that allows customers to integrate their Elevator's controls with their building's control systems.

Wireless Device Solutions - Remote Management of Elevator Control Systems

By making use of any one of Sena Technologies serial device servers, Elevator Manufacturers can build systems to control and monitor components of elevator systems, and provide better remote management, and reduce the need for repair technician making multiple trips.

Solutions:  LS100, LS110, PS110, PS410, PS810, SS100, STS400, STS800 and STS1600

Benefits:

  • Allows users to cost-effectively Ethernet enable existing Elevator control systems.
  • Easy access and quick device configuration of the HelloDevice, by way of a Web Browser, telnet.
  • Flexibility to remotely monitor and control and monitor Elevator control Systems.
  • Allows for easy setup and maintenance to minimize potential downtime during upgrades or expansion of their network.

3. Device Server puts home automation devices on the Network

Customer: Home Central. (http://www.homecentral.net)

Home Central started in 2003 and began installing their first customers in January 2004. Home Central is a home management service that allows customers to view and control security systems, surveillance cameras, thermostats, lighting controls and other devices from any internet connection with any internet enabled device.

Home Central provides communication to the important systems in your home, which are networked together via a home network. The systems in the home communicate to Home Central Servers to make it possible for you to centralize, monitor and control what's going on in your home from any Internet connection.

Wireless Device Solutions - Device Server puts home automation devices on the Network

Home Central's Easy to use home automation system uses an Easy-to-use web interface to control all aspects of the home (Security, surveillance, HVAC, lighting, etc.). Since all of Home Central's systems are network based, the PS100/200 allowed Home Central to network enable their Thermostats and Security Pin Pads within a home, thus allowing the temperature and security of the home to be controlled from a remote location.

Solutions:  PS110, PS410, and PS810

Benefits:

  • Allows users to network enable security and home automation devices that were previously not able to be network enabled, and also easy integration into today's already networked home environments.
  • Allows users the flexibility of using encryption to secure Ethernet communications to the outside world.
  • By using Sena's own Locating Server feature, allows user's to track the Pro Series IP addresses when in a Dynamic IP environment.

4. Device Server puts Building HVAC Systems on the Network

HVAC manufacturers are always trying to find ways to better manage and control their HVAC systems. Many of today's HVAC systems have centralized control panels that require technicians to travel to each building to maintain.

Wireless Device Solutions - Device Server puts Building HVAC Systems on the Network

By making use of any one of Sena Technologies serial device servers, HVAC System Manufacturers can centralize HVAC systems to control and monitor the environment of buildings, and provide seamless and remote management and control, which translates to, reduced operating costs and less down-time.

Solutions:  PS110, PS410, PS810, SS100, STS400, STS800 and STS1600

Benefits:

  • Allows users to network enable HVAC control systems that were previously not able to be network enabled, and also easy transition into today's already networked office environments.
  • Allows users the flexibility of using encryption to secure Ethernet communications to the outside world.
  • Flexibility to remotely monitor and control and monitor various HVAC Systems.
  • Allows for easy setup and maintenance to minimize potential downtime during upgrades or expansion of their network.

5. TCP/IP based Bridge Monitoring System

In the past, Sensors placed on the bridge had been connected to field computers, which are in turn linked to a host computer using RS232 serial lines.

As today's computing environment becomes increasingly complex and is subjected to ongoing change, Sena has introduced TCP/IP technology into modern bridge monitoring systems (BMS) in the areas of Sensor monitoring and data acquisition.

Wireless Device Solutions - TCP/IP based Bridge Monitoring System

By using the "HelloDevice SS100" in the new system, sensor readings are being recorded and analyzed, and results are stored in the field computer's memory, where they can be uploaded to the host on command.

Solutions:  SS100

Benefits:

  • The HelloDevice SS100 facilitates Real-time data monitoring that allows assessment of individual lift cycles, making it possible to sit and watch the strain gages and clinometers indicate the stresses and movements of the bridge during its hourly lift cycle.
